Etymology
editBorrowed from Classical Persian سفید (safēd), from earlier سپید (sapēd), from Middle Persian spyt' (spēd, “white”), from Proto-Iranian *cwaytáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćwaytás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱweytós (“bright; shine”) (compare Old Church Slavonic свѣтъ (světŭ), Old English hwīt (“white”)). Cognate with Arabic سِبِيدَاج (sibīdāj) and Ottoman Turkish اوستبج (üstübec). Doublet of শ্বেত (śśet).
The meaning of sapodilla or sapota was borrowed from Portuguese sapota.
