Etymology

edit

Learned borrowing from Sanskrit समस्या (samasyā, incomplete thing to be completed, literally that which is thrown together (to complete)), from सम्- (sam-) +‎ अस् (as, to throw) +‎ -य (-ya). Compare the similar semantics in Ancient Greek πρόβλημα (próblēma, obstacle, literally that which is thrown forward) (whence English problem). Cognate with Hindi समस्या (samasyā), Nepali समस्या (samasyā)
