Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɣɛːpᴰᴸ⁴ (narrow) (Jonsson, 1991), from Middle Chinese (MC heap, “narrow”). Cognate with Lao ແຄບ (khǣp), Tai Dam ꪵꪁꪚ, Tai Dón ꪵꪅꪚ, Shan ၵႅပ်ႈ (kēp), Saek เกฺ้บ. Possibly doublet of คับ (káp).
