Etymology

Treated as atomic by MED, and not mentioned by STEDT. Component wise, it's ပု (pu., “uncertain prefix”) +‎ ဆိုး (hcui:, “to dye, stain (dyed cloth)”). ပု (pu.) is often a shortened form of ပိုး (pui:, “worm, silk”) as in ပုရွက် (pu.rwak) and ပုစဉ်း (pu.cany:). The 'silk' sense might be reflected better in the Old Burmese coordinate term ပုခြည် (pu.hkrany, “a type of tunic or fabric worn during the Bagan period”). Otherwise, it may have been an anatomical indicator; as in ပုဆစ် (pu.hcac, “knee”). Some traditional Burmologists derive the word from ဆီး (hci:, “to wear, to bar”) so as to match the semantic development of ထဘီ (hta.bhi); however, this is unlikely.
