Etymology

edit

A cross-over of an original root ʿ-ṭ-r used in Modern South Arabian and in Central Semitic, عِطْر (ʕiṭr, perfume), from a basic meaning of “smoke” with some other root, notable options are the things mentioned under نَتَنَ (natana, to stink) and وَتِين (watīn, aorta), as well as ተነ (tännä, to smoke), ተን (tänn, vapour, smoke) which is considered a borrowing from a Classical Syriac ܬܢܢܐ (tennānā, smoke, fume).
