Etymology

From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer [script needed] (tleṃ) /tʰlɤːm/, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁ləəm ~ *t₁luəm (liver).

This term probably acquired its figurative sense from some Indo-Aryan source. Compare Latin iecur (liver; the seat of the soul), Hindi जिगर (jigar, liver; heart, mind, spirit), Urdu جِگَر (jigar, liver; heart, mind, spirit) and Gujarati જિગર (jigar, liver; heart, mind, spirit)
