From Middle Khmer ពាន (bāna), from Old Khmer វាន៑ (vān), វាន (vāna) (first attested in 578), possibly from Old Chinese (OC *baːn, “tray”) (Pou and Jenner, 1980-1981). Cognate with Thai พาน (paan).
