editFrom Middle Khmer ស្មេ (sme), ស្មើ (smœ), ស្មើហ (smœha, “same; equal”), from Old Khmer ស្មេ (sme, idem), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *sməʔ, *sməh (“equal, alike”), ultimately from Sanskrit सम (sama, idem) or Pali sama (idem). Cognate with Thai เสมอ (sà-mə̌ə), Lao ສະເໝີ (sa mœ̄), Lü ᦉᦵᦖᦲ (ṡṁoe).
