Etymology edit

From Middle Khmer ស្មេ (sme), ស្មើ (smœ), ស្មើហ (smœha, same; equal), from Old Khmer ស្មេ (sme, idem), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *sməʔ, *sməh (equal, alike), ultimately from Sanskrit सम (sama, idem) or Pali sama (idem). Cognate with Lao ສະເໝີ (sa mœ̄), ᦉᦵᦖᦲ (ṡṁoe), Khmer ស្មើ (smaə). Doublet of สม (sǒm) (etymology 1).
