From Proto-Mon-Khmer *slaʔ (leaf), cognate with Vietnamese (leaf). Compare Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-la (leaf), whence Chinese (chá, “tea”) and Burmese လက်ဖက် (lakhpak, tea plant).
