Etymology

edit

Probably a technical loanword. Often connected with the root of ἀκή (akḗ, point of an iron tool), but without any obvious reason. Winter connected it with κητήνη (kētḗnē, vessel big as a sea-monster), which could perhaps belong with κῆτος (kêtos, sea-monster) instead.
