editBorrowed from Old Persian, perhaps from either:
- *Aryavaⁿdaʰ, from 𐎠𐎼𐎡𐎹 (a-r-i-y /Aryaʰ/, “Aryan, Iranian”) + *vaⁿdatiy (“to praise”), whence Middle Persian 𐫇𐫏𐫗𐫅𐫏𐫅 (wyndyd, “to praise”);[1]
- or *Arvaⁿtaʰ, retrenchment of a name derived from *arvāʰ ~ *arvataʰ (“swift”).[2]
