Etymology

From Old Japanese. Attested in Shōsōin documents under the spelling 志比禰 (sipi₁ne).[1][2]

Likely a compound of 癈ひ (shifi, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei) form of 癈ふ (shifu, to lose body functions)) + (ne, possibly (ne, root; place where something grows)).[1]
