Etymology
editFrom Old Japanese. Attested in Shōsōin documents under the spelling 志比禰 (sipi₁ne).[1][2]
Likely a compound of 癈ひ (shifi, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei) form of 癈ふ (shifu, “to lose body functions”)) + ね (ne, possibly 根 (ne, “root; place where something grows”)).[1]
