From early modern form ほたゆ (hotayu). Compare Kantō dialect ほだく (hodaku, (derogatory) to say; to make noise; to joke around), ほざく (hozaku, (derogatory) to say) and Old Japanese 呪く (<posaku> → hosaku, to curse).
