Etymology
editCalque of English brokeback; from the title of Taiwanese director Ang Lee's film Brokeback Mountain which featured a homosexual pair.
Since the movie's release, its Chinese name 斷背山 and this word 斷背 has constantly been also rendered as 斷臂山 and 斷臂/断臂 (duànbì) in the internet.
(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Is this due to the dialectal homophony of 背 and 臂? If so, in which dialects are they homophonic?”)
