Etymology edit
Compound of 繁 (shige, “thick, frequent, close together”, the stem of adjective 繁い (shigei), in reference to the tight wrapping) + 籐 (dō, “rattan”).[1][2] Might be encountered in some texts as shigetō, using the unvoiced kan'on reading for the second character.[3][4]
The 重 spelling for the shige portion could be analyzed as a kind of jukujikun (熟字訓), considering the "layers" sense of the kanji.
Attested from the late 1400s.[1]
