Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *dʰéh₁i-to-m (that which is suckled), derivation of the root *dʰeh₁(y)- (to suck, suckle). Anatolian cognates include Cuneiform Luwian 𒋾𒄿𒋫𒀭 (tītan-, breast, teat) and Lycian 𐊘𐊆𐊅𐊁𐊆𐊎𐊆 (τideimi, son, child).

Indo-European cognates include Latin fēmina (woman), fīlius (son), Sanskrit धयति (dháyati, to suck), Ancient Greek θάομαι (tháomai, to suck) and Old Church Slavonic доити (doiti, to suckle).
