Etymology edit

Gikun word derived by applying Chinese-derived spelling 蕃息 (“multiply”), a term which decomposes into 蕃 (“multiply”) + 息 (“give birth, multiply”), to native Japanese verb ふえる (fueru, “to multiply”).
