Appendix:Polish prepositions used with place names

The prepositions used with place names are somewhat irregular and depend on the type of place.

Going to a place edit

do group: Buildings, administrative regions, and most countries use the preposition do with a genitive.

Idziemy do klubu.
We're going to the club.
Jadę na wycieczkę do Włoch.
I'm going on a trip to Italy.
Firma przeniosła centrum logistyczne do kujawsko-pomorskiego.
The company moved its logistics centre to the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.

na group: City districts and neighborhoods, islands, historical regions, venues such as stadiums, gyms or swimming pools and some countries close to Poland use the preposition na with an accusative.

Idę na siłownię.
I'm going to the gym.
Rok temu pojechałem na Litwę.
A year ago I went to Lithuania.
Codziennie jeżdżę na Targówek.
Every day I go to Targówek.
Przeprowadziłem się na Śląsk.
I moved to Silesia.

The countries that use na include: Białoruś, Litwa, Łotwa, Słowacja, Ukraina, Węgry. Historically, most of these were regions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Happening at a place edit

The words in the do group use the preposition w with a locative. The words in the na group use na with a locative.

Moja rodzina mieszka w opolsku.
My family lives in the Opole Voivodeship.
Urodziłem się na Białorusi.
I was born in Belarus.
