Proto-Italic
editEtymology
editPossibly an i-stem derivation of Proto-Indo-European *(s)kleh₂w- (“nail, pin, hook - instruments, of old use for locking doors”); compare Mycenaean Greek 𐀏𐀨𐀹𐀡𐀫 (ka-ra-wi-po-ro /klāwi-pʰoros/, “key-bearer”). Possibly *(s)kleh₂w- gave *klāwos, Latin clāvus; alternatively Latin clāvis may have been borrowed from Ancient Greek κλείς (kleís), ultimately from the same Indo-European source.
