editFirst attested as brimnum in 794. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps a dative plural derivation from Old Dutch brim (“edge, bank”), from Proto-Germanic *brimą. A composite derivation from brim and heem (“home, settlement”) is impossible. Compare Borssele.
