From Medieval Latin Castella, from the plural of Latin castellum (castle, fort, citadel), diminutive of castrum (fortress), reportedly in reference to the central region of Hispānia as terra castellorum (land of castles). Compare French Castille, Italian Castiglia, Portuguese Castela, Spanish Castilla, English Castile.
