Verbs where the ablaut vowel was followed by a consonant cluster in Proto-Indo-European.

There are two subclasses: class IIIa consists of verbs with m or n following the vowel, IIIb consists of the remainder. Class IIIb verbs may have various different vowels because of breaking in Old English.
