Etymology

edit

First attested with certainty as gamberem in 1146. Derived from an ancient hydronym related to Proto-Germanic *gambra- (strong, powerful). A proposed derivation from Proto-Celtic *gamb-ara (confluence of two watercourses) is unlikely. A proposed compound derived from Old Dutch Gamhard (a personal name) or Gamher (a personal name) and heem (home, settlement) is incorrect.
