Central Franconian edit

Etymology edit

From Jüdd (Jew) +‎ Fleesch (meat). The sense “mushroom” in all likelihood derives from the notion of “inferior meat” (and not from a comparison to Jewish human flesh as some[1] have assumed).

Pronunciation edit

Noun edit

Jüddefleesch n

  1. (Ripuarian, historical) kosher meat bought from Jewish butchers (as it was sometimes cheaper)
  2. (Ripuarian, dated) stringy or otherwise inferior pieces of meat
  3. (western Ripuarian, collective) mushrooms
    Synonym: Schwamm
