From Middle High German lœsunge, lōsunge, from Old High German lōsunga (redemption, payment, ransom, fraud, deception), from Proto-West Germanic *lausungu, from Proto-Germanic *lausungō, equivalent to lösen +‎ -ung. Cognate with English leasing, Icelandic lausung. Compare also Dutch oplossing.
