1. The northern part of the ancient kingdom of Nubia, lying between the first and second cataracts of the Nile river and conquered by Ancient Egypt during both the Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom periods; roughly corresponds to the portion of Nubia to the north of the present-day border between Egypt and Sudan.
