Possibly onomatopoeic — according to Duden, derived from a beckoning call for cats, “mi”, optionally reduplicated as “mi-mi(-mi)”. Compare against Albanian mace (“cat”), French matou (“tomcat”), and Proto-Slavic *maca (“pussycat”).
