EtymologyEdit

From Middle Low German mōras, an alteration of Middle Dutch maras on the basis of the predecessor of German Moor (bog; moor). (Compare the same in modern Dutch moeras.) The Dutch word is borrowed from Old French mareis, from Frankish *marisk (marsh, swamp), from Proto-Germanic *mariskaz (marsh, swamp), whence also German Marsch.
