This is the official spelling of the city.[1] Whereas for the province, according to the Canadian government, Québec is the official name in Canadian French and Quebec in Canadian English.[2]

Borrowed from Algonquin kepék (“(it) narrows”), originally referred to the area around Quebec City where the Saint Lawrence River narrows to a cliff-lined gap.

The name of the city does not take a definite article: Québec, de Québec, à Québec. This is also true when the name of the city is used as a metonymy for the government of the province.
