Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 觀世音, composed of 觀 (“to view”), 世 (“world”) and 音 (“sound”), from Literary Chinese 觀世音 (Guānshìyīn, literally “to look at the sounds of the world”), from Sanskrit अवलोकितस्वर (avalokitasvara).

     Trong kinh, đức Phật gọi Quan Âm là “thiện nam tử”. Nhưng chúng ta thường thấy hình ảnh Ngài là một vị nữ nhân mặc áo trắng. Không ít người vẫn đang thắc mắc: Quan Thế Âm Bồ Tát là nam hay nữ? Đức Phật nói rằng Quan Thế Âm cứu khổ chúng sinh bằng cách hóa thân thành 32 tướng khác nhau để tùy ứng với hoàn cảnh.

     In Scripture, the Buddha refers to Avalokiteshvara as a “good man.” But we often see Them depicted as a woman in white. Many are still asking: is Avalokiteshvara a man or a woman? The Buddha said Avalokiteshvara carried out salvation by manifesting as 32 distinct forms according to the given circumstances.
