Etymology

The reconstruction of this term is based entirely on a gloss of the Gothic letter 𐍄 (t) as tyz in the Carolingian-era Codex Vindobonensis 795, folio 20. The reconstructed form given here assumes a derivation from Proto-Germanic *Tīwaz, from Proto-Indo-European *deywós; some scholars have normalized tyz to *tius instead. The derivation from *Tīwaz is likely as the name of the t-rune, ᛏ, is also derived from this theonym. For more information, refer to Lehmann.
