Matasović entertains a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewh₁- (to boil) suffixed with *-rós (Caland adjective suffix).[1] Such a derivation would proceed as *bʰruh₁-rós > *bʰru-rós (Dybo's law shortening) > *bruros > *burros (metathesis).
