Possibly from earlier *orxdo-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃erg-dʰh₁o-, composed of *h₃erg- (to perish) + *dʰeh₁- (to do). Also compare Old Armenian ուռն (uṙn, hammer), from a different root.
