Uncertain;[1] possibly from Proto-Indo-European *tak-, the source of Latin taceo (I am silent), Proto-Germanic *þagjaną (to be silent).[2]

Matasović's reconstruction *tageti is erroneous, as intervocalic -g- is normally deleted in Brittonic, not retained.
