From Proto-Finno-Ugric *orpa +‎ *-oi, borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hárbʰas, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃órbʰos. Cognates include Proto-Samic *oarpēs, Erzya уроз (uroz), Hungarian árva.
