Probably borrowed from Proto-Baltic [Term?] (whence Latvian spiest and Lithuanian spęsti) (derived with +‎ *-tädäk, i.e. *pe(n)t-tä-), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *spenˀstei, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pénd-e-ti, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pend- (to draw, stretch) (whence also Latin pendō (I hang)).
