According to the Indogermanisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch, from Proto-Indo-European *gan-, *gandʰ- (container, vessel) through an extension *gán(dʰ)ō.[1] Cognates within Indo-European uncertain. Probably related to *kannǭ.
