Etymology

Kroonen reconstructs Proto-Indo-European *sert- (to hit (?); to rub against, move obliquely against). Compare Hittite 𒊬𒋫𒄿 (šar-ta-i, to wipe, rub) and perhaps Welsh serth (obscene). Kloekhorst meanwhile argues for *serdʰH- based on Hittite.
