From Proto-Indo-European *deyn-, *dyew- (day). Cognate with Lithuanian dienà (day), Latin diēs (day), Sanskrit दिन (diná, day). Related to Proto-Germanic *Tīwaz, from Proto-Indo-European *deywós (god).
