Proto-Hellenic

edit

Etymology

edit

Probably from Proto-Indo-European *sph₂-dʰh₁-éh₂ with accent shift, from *(s)peh₂- (to draw) +‎ *dʰeh₁- (to do, to put) +‎ *-eh₂ (feminine ending). Compare Proto-Germanic *spadō (spade), and (perhaps) with a different suffix Hittite 𒅖𒉺𒀀𒋻 (išpātar, skewer, dagger).
