From Proto-Indo-European *som-bʰondʰ-ó-s, from *som- (together) +‎ *bʰendʰ- (to bind) +‎ *-ós. Equivalent to *sam- (together) +‎ *bʰandʰás (binding, joining). Cognate with Old Norse samband n (connection).
