From Old Norse samband, from Proto-Germanic *sambandą, from Proto-Indo-European *som-bʰondʰ-ó-m, from *som- (“together”) + *bʰendʰ- (“to bind”) + *-ós. Equivalent to sam- (“together”) + band (“connection, binding”). Cognate with Sanskrit सम्बन्ध m (sambandhá, “connection, binding”), Ossetian ӕмбонд (æmbond, “fence”).
