Compound of *kata- (“one side”) +‎ *na (“edge”).^[1]^[2]^[3]

This na element is spelled in monolingual Japanese sources as 刃 (“edge, blade”), but there is no historical attestation for any na reading for this character. Possibly cognate with modern Korean 날 (nal, “blade”).
