EtymologyEdit

Compounded term, with the first element *neto- possibly reflecting Proto-Indo-European *nekʷto-, oblique e-grade of *nókʷts (night). The second element is usually taken to be *pyřь (flier), from the lengthened zero grade of the same root also found in *pariti and *pьrati.
