editFrom Proto-Balto-Slavic *sēˀg-, *senˀg-, from Proto-Indo-European *seg-, *seng-. Cognate with Lithuanian sègti (“to fasten, to pin”) (1sg. segù, 1sg. past segiaũ), Latvian segt (“to cover”) (1sg. sȩdzu), Sanskrit सजति (sájati, “to adhere to”), causative सञ्जयति (sañjayati), Old Persian [script needed] (frahanǰati, “to hang”), Old Irish suanem (“rope”) < *sogn-.
