Etymology

From *spě̀ti (“advance, ripen, hurry”) +‎ *-xъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *spḗˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *spéh₁- (root present), from *speh₁- (“succeed, prosper”). Cognate with Lithuanian spė̃kas (“power”), Latvian spȩ̀ks (“power”).
