From Proto-Germanic *saw(w)ą, *saw(w)az, from Proto-Indo-European *sow-ó-s, from *sew- (to press out) +‎ *-ós. Cognate with Sanskrit सव (savá, juice (of the Soma)), सुनोति (sunóti, to press (Soma)).[1][2]
