From Javanese ꦱꦸꦫꦧꦪ (surabaya), a compound word of ꦱꦸꦫ (sura, “white shark”) + ꦧꦪ (baya, “crocodile”), from Old Javanese sura, asura (“god, deity”) + bhaya (“danger, calamity”), from Sanskrit असुर (asura) + भय (bhaya).
