@Fay Freak: There is apparently a species of bird بُرْكَة (burka), whence the Maghrebi word for "duck". Can you find what species it is? —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 21:59, 12 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Metaknowledge: Here a scholar says “the precise species is unknown”, and such is likely to stay if it has not been continued to be used for the same species like the meaning of مُكّاء (mukkāʔ) was uncovered in 1984 to the public and is now uncovered via the internet; uncertainties about the meaning of bird names in the old poems occur more frequently as compared to other animals or plants because of their more flighty (flüchtig) nature. Additionally because of the homography with common words that even are to be expected in ornithological works (water pool …) a search for occurrences is rather hopeless. @Metaknowledge: What do you think, should we have a specific category, apart from Category:Terms with uncertain meaning by language, for vernacular names for organisms the meanings of which are not known exactly enough? Because the meaning is not really unknown but “known to an insufficient point”. Perhaps Category:Vernacular names of organisms with underspecific glosses by language. @Fay Freak: I don't see the utility of such a category. In any case, if this word is truly unknown, then I assume it is classical, in which case it should be marked as such. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 23:28, 12 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Metaknowledge: What’s the utility then of the categories Category:Terms with uncertain meaning by language?
I think separating the names of organisms would be more useful than that since it could avail emprises to add glosses as such a category is less sundry. {{rfclarify}} is also inappropriate since there is no expectation for an exacter gloss to be added, just a chance. You of course think of قَسْوَرَة (qaswara), I thought rather of خِطْر (ḵiṭr), كَحْلَاء (kaḥlāʔ), قُلْب (qulb) and some others, and I cannot use {{uncertain}} if I do not include “possibilities” but a one gloss which is however vague – so you see the difference? Actually it can appear often if we have Akkadian, Hittite, or the like, that we can write “an unidentified animal/plant of the Y characteristics”, where {{uncertain}} does not fit with its design. I just feel like we miss a template. Fay Freak (talk) 00:38, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that category has utility either, but the template does. A template for this purpose would perhaps also be useful, but I don't see it as a pressing need. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 01:12, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
